Commenting on today's announcement from the Department of Work and Pensions that it is to cut up to 12,000 jobs over the next three years, Liberal Democrat Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary, Danny Alexander said:

"At a time when the amount of money being lost through official error at the DWP is rising, it is reckless to be cutting more staff.

"Centralisation in the last few years has caused delays in benefit claims being processed and huge problems for many of the most vulnerable claimants.

"One charity in Inverness is even giving out food parcels to people left destitute by delays in the benefits system.

"The Government should be focusing on getting more people into work. That is the way to make savings, not by making life harder for our most vulnerable citizens."
