Forty seven disabled parking badges were seized by police during a crackdown on fraudulent use in Brighton and Hove. Police said 40 of those were suspected of being stolen or misused by able-bodied drivers "borrowing" them. The other seven had expired.

Officers checked 991 vehicles with blue badges in a three-week crackdown in a joint operation with the city council.

Councillor Geoffrey Theobald promised further crackdowns during the summer. He said disabled drivers had welcomed the crackdown. The move was to free-up disabled parking spaces and make sure they were available for the people who genuinely needed them, he added.

Out of the 991 vehicles checked, 730 badges were found to be legal, 47 were seized and further checks are being carried out on another 214 badges to ensure they were being properly used.
