Disability charity urges calm over councillor who said disabled children "should be put down"

8 Mar 2013

PEOPLE angry at a Cornwall Councillor who said disabled children "should be put down" have been urged not to call him or visit his home.

Disability Cornwall, the charity which Wadebridge East councillor Collin Brewer had to apologise after making the comment, urged people not to engage in a "hate campaign" against the independent councillor.

In a statement Disability Cornwall said: "Thank you to everybody for the support we have received, but we have concerns some people are either calling Councillor Brewer's home telephone number or even visiting his house in connection with the comments he made regarding disabled children. Please do not do either as it doesn't achieve anything and would make it seem like a hate campaign."

"If you would like to make your views known then please contact Cornwall Council."

Cornwall Council's director of children's services, Trevor Doughty also issued a comment in relation to the matter. He said: "As director of children's services for Cornwall Council I am shocked and disappointed by the remarks made by Councillor Brewer. The comments were cruel and ignorant and are contrary to the council's policy of supporting all people with disabilities.

"We are very proud of the disability services provided in Cornwall wish to totally dissociate ourselves with these completely unacceptable views."

More than 1,700 people have voted in a poll on thisiscornwall.co.uk asking whether Cllr Brewer should resign with 96% saying he should.
