Fears raised over steeple funds

A disability rights charity has criticised £2.3m plans to renovate the historic Midsteeple in Dumfries. The Nithsdale Coalition of Disabled People said the local council should rethink the project's funding.

Coalition chairman Alistair Moir raised fears over plans to finance the repairs with a 40-year loan from the new leisure centre fund. But Dumfries and Galloway Council said borrowing was permitted by the Scottish Executive for major capital projects.

Coalition Chairman Alistair Moir claimed an increase in borrowing would result in spiralling costs.
