More research urgently needed on Alzheimer's - Gidley

30 Mar 2007

Commenting on new research claming that Alzheimer's patients are dying early due to controversial drugs, Liberal Democrat Health Spokesperson, Sandra Gidley MP said:

"If confirmed, this worrying research indicates the urgent need for better and more up to date research on the most effective drugs to treat Alzheimer's.

"Alzheimer's is a terrible disease, where people are robbed of their dignity and quality of life. Drugs are essential in slowing this process down.

"It seems bizarre that, as a result of recent NICE decisions, the only option available to practitioners is the use of sedative drugs. Treatments which slow down the onset of the disease are currently restricted for use by the NHS.

"This disturbing evidence indicates that the recent NICE decision effectively shortens lives."
