Blunkett urges factory reprieve

Former Home Secretary David Blunkett has called for a reversal of Aberdeen City Council's decision to cut funding for a factory for the disabled. Mr Blunkett said he was "deeply disturbed" that the Glencraft workshop faced closure. Speaking in Aberdeen, he said disabled workers needed to feel valued.

NHS care pleas after peer's death

Concerns about the NHS care of a disabled hereditary peer who died in a Berkshire hospital are to be referred to the Health Secretary. Crossbencher Baroness Darcy de Knayth, 69, who was wheelchair-bound after a car accident, died at Wexham Park Hospital in Slough on Saturday.

Private firms to find people work

Private firms and voluntary groups are to be offered cash incentives to get unemployed people into work for longer. Work Secretary James Purnell said the plan, which will see more payments if someone is in work for six months, was intended to "personalise" services. It came as MPs said 40% of jobseekers allowance claimants who find a job are out of work again within six months.

Diabetic mice 'cured' with drugs

US scientists have managed to rid diabetic mice of the effects of the disease using a cocktail of drugs. The mice, who had type 1 diabetes, started producing their own insulin after taking a mixture of four drugs.
