A new way to manipulate human embryonic stem cells (ESCs) offers hope of a treatment for muscular dystrophies. The muscle-wasting conditions are caused by genetic mutations which block production of a key protein in cells.

Gene advance on immune disorder

The genes involved in the devastating immune system disease Lupus, which affects 50,000 people in the UK, have been identified. A team led by London's Imperial College examined the genetic makeup of 3,000 women, publishing their findings in the journal Nature Genetics.

Physiotherapists 'can't get work'

Half of all physiotherapists who graduated last year in England cannot find jobs, according to a survey released to the BBC. The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy said the government should act urgently to sort out the problem, as NHS money has paid for their training.

Teenager is refused hysterectomy

An NHS trust has ruled it will not allow a hysterectomy on a severely disabled girl to go ahead. Alison Thorpe, 45, said her 15-year-old daughter Katie, who has cerebral palsy, would be confused by periods and they would cause her indignity.
