Hearing dog may be a hero hound

A Dedicated dog has been shortlisted for a national Hero Hound award. Rosie, the hearing dog for Debs Rolley-Parnell, has reached the final 25 of a competition, organised by Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. The competition was set up to find the nation's most heroic dog as part of the charity's 25th anniversary celebrations.

Warning over 'tough' benefit test

Thousands of sick and disabled people could be deprived of incapacity benefits because of plans to toughen up the eligibility test, campaigners warn. Changes to the Personal Capability Assessment were announced last year as part of welfare reform.

UK to sign disability convention

The UK will be among the first 50 or so countries to sign a new United Nations convention giving greater rights and freedoms to disabled people. Disability minister Anne McGuire will sign the treaty at a ceremony in the General Assembly Chamber in New York. The convention is a first step in ensuring that disabled people around the world have the same human rights as everyone else.
